The Patriots Might Be Crabby…

(PR) Bridgewater, NJ – The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs defeated the Somerset Patriots 5-3 before 6,803 fans at TD Bank Ballpark on Friday evening.

Southern Maryland jumped out to an early 2-0 on back-to-back solo homeruns by third baseman Kody Kirkland (7) and second baseman Casey Benjamin (9) to lead off the game.

The Blue Crabs added two runs in the top of the third inning after Benjamin doubled and designated hitter Matt Craig (11) followed with a two run homerun to make the score 4-0.

Somerset cut the lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning after first baseman Pete LaForest walked, catcher J.R. Hopf doubled, and shortstop David Housel singled to score both runners.

Southern Maryland answered back in the top of the sixth inning on a solo homerun by center fielder Jeremy Owens (11) for the 5-2 lead.

The Patriots cut the lead to 5-3 after LaForest doubled and came around to score on an RBI double by right fielder Michael Hernandez.

Blue Crabs starter Connor Robertson (5-3) got the win, allowing two runs on four hits in six innings pitched. Patriots starter Jesse Darcy (1-9) suffered the loss, allowing five runs on 11 hits in 5.1 innings pitched. Jim Ed Warden picked up his 14th save of the season after allowing a run in the ninth inning.
