Patriots Are Walk-Off Winners

Note: Prior to the game, Somerset re-signed P Chris Buglovsky, activated P Jason Monti and placed P Tim Lavigne on the DL.

(PR) Bridgewater, NJ – The Somerset Patriots defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 9-8 before 6,219 fans at TD Bank Ballpark on Saturday evening.

Somerset overcame a 8-7 deficit in the bottom of the ninth inning after left fielder Noah Hall reached on a single and came around to score on a game winning two-run homerun by catcher Pete LaForest (6) for the 9-8 win.

Southern Maryland took an 8-6 lead with two runs in the top of the eighth inning. Second baseman Kody Kirkland singled, stole second, and moved to third on a wild pitch. First baseman Matt Craig followed with an RBI single to plate Kirkland to tie up the game. The Blue Crabs took the lead on an RBI single by designated hitter Jason Lane.

The Patriots rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a 7-6 lead. Hall reached on a fielder’s choice and LaForest drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Right fielder Michael Hernandez then hit a two-run triple to deep right center field to plate both runners.

The Blue Crabs took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Shortstop Travis Garcia reached on an error, catcher Christian Lopez drew a walk, and Kirkland (8) cleared the bases with a three-run home run.

Somerset answered with a run in the bottom of the second inning on a solo home run by Hall (2) to cut the score to 3-1.

The Patriots scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning to take the lead. Second baseman Tim Raines, advanced to second on a single by center fielder Joe Burke, and scored on an RBI single by third baseman Jeff Nettles. Designated hitter Josh Pressley followed with a three-run home run (8) for a 5-3 advantage.

Southern Maryland regained the lead with three runs in the top of the seventh inning. Left fielder Shaun Cumberland hit a solo home run (2) to make the score 5-4. Craig and Garcia each singled to put runners on first and second. Right fielder Jamar Hill then reached on a fielder’s choice and an error on the play allowed Craig to score to tie the game. The Blue Crabs took the lead on an RBI single by Lopez to make the score 6-5.

Patriots reliever Jonathon Ellis (1-0) picked up the win and Blue Crabs reliever Ryan Speier (1-2) suffered the loss after surrendering the game winning homerun in the ninth inning.
