Patriots Drop To Under .500

(PR) Lancaster, PA – Bryant Nelson’s three-run homer in the bottom of the 4th capped off a five-run frame while Lancaster plated three in the 7th as the Barnstormers defeated the Somerset Patriots 9-6 on Saturday night at Clipper Magazine Stadium, taking a four-game series from the Patriots.

All nine men came to bat in the 4th inning for Lancaster against Josh Miller who allowed just three base runners in his first three innings of work. But four of the first five men reached against Miller (6-5) to start the 4th and after RBI base hits from Jed Morris and Vic Gutierrez, Nelson’s shot put the home team in front 5-0.

Somerset got its first run in the 6th inning after a Wayne Lydon single and a Tim Raines Jr. walk against Lancaster’s Ben Fritz. A one-out single from Josh Pressley finished the shutout for Fritz (2-5) who notched his first career win against Somerset in eight starts. The 6th-frame run would be the only one against Fritz who tossed 7.0 innings, scattering seven hits and striking out six.

After Somerset got on the board, the Barnstormers answered against Miller with an unearned run with Michael Woods putting Lancaster in front 6-1. Miller finished 6.0 innings, giving up 10 hits, giving way to Jonathon Ellis who ran into trouble in the 7th. Three more Lancaster runs scored against Ellis after Elliott Ayala’s second throwing error of the night allowed the frame to continue. Ellis didn’t help himself either with three walks, including a bases loaded free pass to Morris. A wild pitch from Casey Cahill and a sac fly brought home the final Barnstormer runs of the game putting them ahead 9-1.

Somerset surged late with four unearned runs in the 8th against Eric Ackerman, three coming on a Pete LaForest homer. The Patriots further cut the lead with a Joe Burke solo shot off Charlie Weatherby in the 9th. David Housel followed up with a double but Weatherby retired the next three men to finish off the matchup in the midst of a rain shower that never stopped play.

Somerset (0-3, 36-37) and Lancaster (3-0, 34-39) finish off a four-game set on Sunday when Jesse Darcy (1-7, 6.09) and Jason Simontacchi (2-4, 5.35) take the hill. Coverage begins at 5:55 pm on 1450 WCTC-AM and online at and
