Somerset Second Half Off To A Rough Start

(PR) Lancaster, PA – Ryan Mulhern drove in five runs including the go-ahead tallies in the 7th inning to help the Lancaster Barnstormers defeat the Somerset Patriots 9-5 on Friday night at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

Mulhern served a double down the left field line with two outs in the 7th off of Brian Henderson to give Lancaster a 7-5 lead. The two clubs had battled back and forth over the course of the night and after Somerset tied the game in the 6th at 5-5, Lancaster brought home a pair in each of their final two at-bats. Seven of the nine Barnstormer runs, including their final four, came with two outs.

Lancaster took an early lead in the 2nd with a solo homer from Jed Morris and 3rd-inning RBIs from Aaron Herr and Mulhern against Somerset starter Tim Lavigne. But Somerset batted around in the 4th inning, notching three hits and drawing two walks while plating three to tie the game. The Patriots picked up from there in the 5th as Josh Pressley doubled with two outs and was brought home by Jeff Nettles, giving Somerset its first lead at 4-3.

The lead was short lived though as Jason Perry doubled home Bryan Nelson in the 5th, tying the game. Three of the first four men reached against Lavigne on base hits and the right-hander exited the game after having his shoulder checked by trainer Ryan McMahon. Carlos Hines entered in relief and allowed a Mulhern sacrifice fly, a two-out run giving Lancaster a 5-4 advantage. Somerset scored for a third straight frame in the 6th, tying the game once again. Elliott Ayala’s ground rule double pushed Lancaster starter Jose Sanchez out of the game after 5.1 innings. After Ross Peeples got JR Hopf to fly out, David Housel sent a liner into right field which was misplayed by Jed Morris. The ball slipped past him and turned into a run-scoring triple for Housel, leveling the clubs at 5-5. But the Barnstormer bullpen was solid the rest of the way while Lancaster’s offense notched late-inning runs for the victory.
