Nettles Back, Hagen Hurt; Ellis Signed, Reilly Released

(PR) Bridgewater, NJ- The Five-Time Atlantic League Champion Somerset Patriots will start the second half of the season with third baseman Jeff Nettles back in the lineup. The Patriots have also announced the signing of right-handed pitcher Jonathon Ellis.

Nettles missed almost all of the first half of the season with a broken hand he suffered when he was hit by a pitch against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs on Friday, May 7th.

Nettles has been activated for the first game against the Lancaster Barnstormers to start off the half this evening.

Before the injury, Nettles was hitting .362 with 17 hits, four doubles, a home run, and nine RBI in 13 games.

Since joining Somerset in 2003, Nettles has been one of the top players in Patriots and Atlantic League history, ranking as the Patriots career leader in RBI (479), home runs (119), doubles (160) games played (679), at bats (2,509), and hits (733). He has helped the Patriots win three championships and is a two-time MVP of the Championship Series.

Nettles finished the 2009 season with a .295 batting average with 148 hits, 29 doubles, 15 home runs, and 93 RBI in 133 games played. More impressive was his MVP performance in the post-season, where he hit .281 with nine runs scored, three home runs, and seven RBI.

Ellis has two seasons of Triple-A experience with the San Diego Padres organization.

In 2009, Ellis appeared in 51 games for Triple-A Portland, going 7-3 while striking out 55 batters. He began the 2010 season with the Camden Riversharks, going 1-1 in nine appearances.

He has a minor league career 3.68 ERA and 298 strikeouts in 332.2 innings pitched in 251 games played.

Ellis has also been activated for tonight’s game at Lancaster.

In other team news, the Patriots have placed second baseman Matt Hagen on the disabled list after surgery on his hand. He is expected to be back with the team in two weeks. The Patriots have also placed catcher Mike Santoro on the inactive list and released pitcher Matt Reilly.

The 2010 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue on the road until Friday, July 16th when the Patriots return to TD Bank Ballpark for a 7:05 pm game against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs.
