Ho Hum…Another Comeback Win

(PR) Bridgewater, NJ – The Somerset Patriots defeated the Newark Bears 4-3 before 6,858 fans at TD Bank Ballpark on Saturday night to win their fourth straight game.

The Patriots rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take their first lead of the game. Left fielder Tim Raines, Jr. singled, stole second, and scored on an RBI single by second baseman Matt Hagen. Hagen stole second, advanced to third on an error, and scored on a sacrifice fly by left fielder Michael Hernandez for a 4-3 lead.

Newark jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning. First baseman Daryle Ward reached on a fielder’s choice, and came around to score on a two-run homerun by designated hitter Carol Everett (1) for the 2-0 advantage.

The Patriots scored in the bottom of the first inning to cut the lead to 2-1 on a solo homerun by Hagen (3).

Somerset tied up the game with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Hagen reached on an error and later scored on an RBI single by Hernandez to knot the game up at 2-2.

Newark broke the tie to regain the lead in the top of the seventh inning. Shortstop Paddy Matera singled and scored on a fielder’s choice that allowed Everett to reach safely.

Patriots reliever Brian Henderson (3-2) got the win after tossing 0.2 innings without surrendering a run or a hit. Bears starter Paul Fagan (3-6) got the loss, allowing four runs on nine hits in 6.1 innings pitched. Patriots closer Ryan Houston picked up his 15th save of the season after pitching a scoreless ninth inning.

The Somerset Patriots 2010 Season presented by Ford will continue at home with a 1:35 pm game against the Newark Bears on Sunday afternoon.
