Don’t Call It A Comeback…Oh, Wait. It Was.

(PR) Bridgewater, NJ – The Somerset Patriots defeated the Long Island Ducks 7-6 at TD Bank Ballpark on Thursday night.

The Patriots scored in the bottom of the seventh inning to break a 6-6 tie. Right fielder Noah Hall was hit by a pitch, catcher Jason Belcher singled, and first baseman J.R. Hopf singled to score Hall for the 7-6 advantage.

Long Island jumped out to an early lead in the top of the second inning. Right fielder Dustan Mohr walked, left fielder Matt Esquival singled, third baseman Matt Cavagnaro walked, and Mohr came around to score on an error. Center fielder Billy Kovatch then doubled to plate both Esquival and Cavagnaro, and shortstop Erick Monzon hit a two-run homerun (6) to make the score 5-0.

The Patriots answered with four runs to cut the lead to 5-4 in the bottom of the second inning. Left fielder Michael Hernandez walked, Hall singled, and Belcher singled to score Hernandez. Shortstop Elliott Ayala followed with a single, first baseman Hopf singled to score Hall, and center fielder Wayne Lydon two-run single plated Belcher and Ayala.

Somerset evened the score in the bottom of the third inning after a solo homerun by designated hitter Josh Pressley (4). Pressley hit .429 with three doubles, two home runs, and four RBI in the series.

Long Island regained the lead in the top of the fifth inning after second baseman Ray Navarrete doubled and scored on an RBI double by first baseman Johnny Hernandez to make the score 6-5.

The Patriots scored to tie the game 6-6 in the bottom of the sixth inning after Ayala singled, Hopf singled, second baseman Tim Raines Jr. reached on an error, and third baseman Matt Hagen singled to drive home Ayala.

Patriots reliever Jerry Dunn (1-0) picked up the win with two scoreless innings pitched. Long Island reliever Ivan Moldando (1-2) suffered the loss, allowing a run on three hits in 1.1 innings pitched. Ryan Houston earned his 14th save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning pitched.

The Somerset Patriots 2010 Season presented by Ford will continue at home with a 7:05 pm game against the Newark Bears on Friday night.
