Patriots Blast Bluefish In Season Opener, 8-0

(PR) Bridgeport, CT- The Somerset Patriots shut out the Bridgeport Bluefish 8-0 at the Ballpark At Harbor Yard on Thursday night to start the 2010 season.

The Patriots got on the board with two runs in the top of the third inning. Center fielder Wayne Lydon reached on an error, right fielder Noah Hall reached on an error, and both runners scored on an error that allowed third baseman Jeff Nettles to reach safely for a 2-0 lead.

Somerset added four runs in the top of the fifth inning. Hall singled, Nettles singled, and then designated hitter Josh Pressley drove home Hall with an RBI single. First baseman Pete LaForest would give Somerset a 6-0 lead with a three-run home run (1) to right field.

The Patriots scored again in the top of the sixth inning. Lydon drew a walk and later scored on an RBI single by Pressley to make the score 7-0.

Somerset plated their final run in the top of the eighth inning. Lydon singled, advanced to second on a balk, and scored on a pinch hit single by Joe Burke for the 8-0 final.

Patriots starter Josh Miller (1-0) pitched six innings and allowed five hits and struck out three to earn the win. Bridgeport starter Matt Pike (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing six runs, four earned, on seven hits in 4.1 innings pitched.
