Patriots Add Three, Including Two Big League Arms

(PR) Bridgewater, NJ – The Five-Time Atlantic League Champion Somerset Patriots have announced the signings of former Major League pitchers Brian Sweeney and Mike Thompson and reliever Ryan Houston.

Sweeney has 49 games of Major League experience with the Seattle Mariners and the San Diego Padres. He has a Major League career record of 3-0 with a 3.49 ERA in 80 innings pitched.

Sweeney also has seven seasons of Triple-A experience and a minor league career record of 96-69, a 4.02 ERA, and 1,079 strikeouts in 1,485.2 innings pitched in 347 games.

He has spent the past three seasons playing in Japan for Nippon.

Thompson has 26 games of Major League experience with the Padres, as recently as the 2007 season. He recorded 40 strikeouts in 107.2 innings pitched, starting 16 Major League games.

He also has four seasons of Triple-A experience for the Padres and the Pittsburgh Pirates organization.

Thompson pitched the 2008 season in Triple-A in Indianapolis and finished with a 3-3 record, a 4.25 ERA, and
27 strikeouts in 59.1 innings pitched in 22 games played.

Thompson has a minor league career 62-62 record, a 4.70 ERA, and 627 strikeouts in 1,067.2 innings in 228 games pitched.

Houston has four seasons of Triple-A experience in the Toronto Blue Jays, Houston Astros, and Milwaukee Brewers organizations.

Houston spent the 2009 season in Nashville, the Triple-A affiliate of the Brewers, and finished with a 5-4 record, a 3.62 ERA, seven saves, and 42 strikeouts in 49.2 innings pitched in 40 games played.

He has a career record of 43-41, a 4.08 ERA, and 677 strikeouts in 752.1 innings pitched in 358 games played.
